This is a guide to some basic genealogy resources that relate to Douglas County. They are located in Special Collections at the Douglas County Public Library.
The Douglas County Health Department has Douglas County birth records (from 1919 to the present). If you are looking for the names of someone’s parents, you may want to also look in the Census for the years when the person was a child.

You may also search the Ancestry and HeritageQuest databases using the library computers. Ancestry and HeritageQuest have all of the available censuses for the U.S. and some other countries, and can be searched by name.
Missing Dates
1890 Census records were lost in a fire; no library has them.
Census records for 1940 will not be available until 2012, for privacy reasons. Census records for 1950 will be made available in 2022, and so on.

is a
searchable database that includes U.S. census records, searchable family and
local history books, and PERSI, an index to genealogy and local history
periodicals.
This database can be
searched from your computer at home. Please pick up the GALILEO password at the
library to do this.

You can also search the Ancestry database on the library computers. Ancestry contains military records, especially World War I draft cards and Civil War records.
The local newspaper goes back to 1930 but there are several large gaps.
